Au cours d’une conférence de presse organisée à New‐York, Francesca Schiavone a annoncé qu’elle mettait un terme définitif à sa carrière de joueuse professionnelle. La joueuse transalpine, âgée de 38 ans, a remporté huit titres dont Roland‐Garros en 2010 où elle était devenue la première joueuse italienne à soulever un titre du Grand Chelem. Son meilleur classement a été une quatrième place mondiale en 2011. Elle a aussi conduit sa sélection à trois titres en Fed Cup (2006, 2009 et 2010).
