Retraitée des courts depuis un an, Francesca Schiavone, âgée de 39 ans, a annoncé sur les réseaux sociaux qu’elle menait un combat contre un cancer. « Après un silence de sept, huit mois, j’ai envie de partager avec vous ce qui m’est arrivé. On m’a diagnostiqué un cancer, a‑t‐elle expliqué. J’ai fait une chimiothérapie, je me suis battue dans ce dur combat. Je respire toujours. J’ai gagné cette bataille. Et maintenant, je suis de retour. »
La Milanaise a remporté Roland‐Garros en 2010 et elle avait atteint la quatrième place mondiale en 2011. Elle avait annoncé sa retraite après l’US Open 2018.
